More than note-taking

Your notes should change how you think.

It's easy to collect quotes, highlights and bookmarks. The real value begins when you put ideas into your own words, connect them to what you already know and use them to form new perspectives.

Stop collecting information you never use. Discover a practical approach to capturing ideas, connecting what you learn and developing original thinking.

“The book, while fantastic for giving me the conceptual understanding of the Zettelkasten method, I felt lacked examples to properly understand it.”
Martin Adams, from the introduction to Atomic Note-Taking
Book page: the fleeting, literature and permanent note workflow, illustrated as a flow of note cards into a slip box.
From the book, p.48: the fleeting, literature and permanent note workflow.

The method

From collected information to connected understanding.

Capture. Express. Connect. Develop. Create.

  1. Capture

    Fleeting notes

Capture highlights, ideas and questions as you read, watch or listen.

    Fleeting notes

Fleeting notes are quick, temporary notes to capture thoughts, ideas, book highlights, quotes, etc

  2. Express

    Literature notes

Rewrite one idea per note in your own words.

    Motioning

Motioning is where we feel progress towards a goal but take no action.

  3. Connect

    Permanent notes

Link each note to what you already know in your slip box.

    Motioning

  4. Develop

    Maps of Content

Organise clusters of notes to see the shape of your thinking.

    Map of Content

    Publishing

Turn connected notes into articles, videos and original work.

    Writing a blog article
